If: A Fathers Advice to His Son by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, dont deal in lies,
Or being hated dont give way to hating,
And yet dont look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth youve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and buildem up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: Hold on!

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything thats in it,
And---which is more---youll be a Man, my son!

Kipling, who as a novelist dramatized the ambivalence of the British colonial experience, was born of English parents in Bombay and as a child knew Hindustani better than English. He spent an unhappy period of exile from his parents and the Indian heat with a harsh aunt in England, followed by the public schooling that inspired his "Stalky" stories. He returned to India at 18 to work on the staff of the Lahore Civil and Military Gazette and rapidly became a prolific writer. His mildly satirical work won him a reputation in England, and he returned there in Shortly after, his first novel, The Light That Failed was published, but it was not altogether successful. In the early s, Kipling met and married Caroline Balestier and moved with her to her family's estate in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Charles R. Smith, Jr. He grew up in California and attended the Brooks Institute of Photography.

When I left the SEAL Teams to attend graduate school and dip my toe into the world of entrepreneurship, I completely immersed myself in this endeavor. I knew that I would face many new challenges. But when my oldest son was two-and-a-half, I was transformed into a full-time single parent literally overnight. That's when the real learning, and teaching, began. As much as I told myself that the situation wouldn't affect my ability to lead my company with my business partner, it did. I had to prioritize my son and his needs over my own. That's being a parent right?
