Long Way From Chicago Movie Trailer
In A Long Way from Chicago , Joey Dowdel and his younger sister, Mary Alice, are sent to spend a week every summer from with their grandmother in her small Illinois town located halfway between Chicago and St. Not even the big city crimes of Chicago offer as much excitement as Grandma Dowdel when she outwits the banker, sets illegal fish traps, catches the town's poker-playing businessmen in their underwear, and saves the town from the terror of the Cowgill boys. Now an old man, Joe Dowdel remembers these seven summers and the "larger than life" woman who outsmarted the law and used blackmail to help those in need.

Dial, ISBN Grades 4 and up. Review Richard Peck has been giving us thoughtful young adult novels for many years. I do think it's his finest work. Peck takes us through more than a decade of Americana as witnessed by two kids from Chicago and, in the process, he has given us one of the most delightfully wacky, crafty characters in young adult literature in this grandmother. If you're looking for a sweet, soft and diminutive storybook grandma in the country, look elsewhere.
What happens when Joey and his sister, Mary Alice — two city slickers from Chicago — make their annual summer visits to Grandma Dowdel's seemingly sleepy Illinois town? August They see their first corpse, and he isn't resting easy. August The Cowgill boys terrorize the town, and Grandma fights back. August Joey and Mary Alice help Grandma trespass, poach, catch the sheriff in his underwear, and feed the hungry — all in one day. And there's more, as Joey and Mary Alice make seven summer trips to Grandma's — each one funnier than the year before — in self-contained chapters that readers can enjoy as short stories or take together for a rollicking good novel.
Another excellent book for reluctant readers. A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck is written as a series of vignettes that are funny snapshots of life in rural America during the depression. The humor, simple language and short story format make this book accessible to struggling readers.
