The Distant Hours by Kate MortonA long lost letter arrives in the post and Edie Burchill finds herself on a journey to Milderhurst Castle, a great but moldering old house, where the Blythe spinsters live and where her mother was billeted 50 years before as a 13 year old child during WWII. Inside the decaying castle, Edie begins to unravel her mother’s past. But there are other secrets hidden in the stones of Milderhurst, and Edie is about to learn more than she expected. The truth of what happened in ‘the distant hours’ of the past has been waiting a long time for someone to find it.
Morton once again enthralls readers with an atmospheric story featuring unforgettable characters beset by love and circumstance and haunted by memory, that reminds us of the rich power of storytelling.

Q&A: MILDERHURST & THE MUD MAN
I will, and it is. I was a third of the way into writing a different story when the Sisters Blythe began whispering in my ear. I tried to ignore them but they were insistent, and eventually I agreed to give them a week. It was clear to me that this was the story I had to tell. The Distant Hours took ten months to write, beginning to end, with another three months of intensive editing and rewriting. Milderhurst Castle is an invention, but my love affair with old buildings means I visit and read about a lot of real places. Sissinghurst Castle was an inspiration to me, perhaps most clearly due to its tower, its location in Kent, and its link to the literary world through Vita Sackville-West and the Nicolson family.
It started with a letter. A letter that had been lost a long time, waiting out half a century in a forgotten postal bag in the dim attic of a nondescript house in Bermondsey…. She discovers the joys of books and fantasy and writing, but also, ultimately, the dangers. Old ladies now, the three still live together, the twins nursing Juniper, whose abandonment by her fiance in plunged her into madness. Inside the decaying castle, Edie begins to unravel her mother?
