5 science-backed tips for being single and happy—even if you *really* want a partner

When did being single become some sort of disease that everyone wants to get rid of? Why does everyone think that being in a relationship or married is superior to being alone? Those are some questions you might want to think about. Our culture places such an emphasis on being part of a couple that it makes single people feel like lepers sometimes. But I want to challenge you to reframe being alone. It's all about your attitude.

Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security. It is hard to be single sometimes. The world around you may seem coupled up, everyone in love, no one else alone. Though most people can simply step back and realize that not everyone is actually in a relationship, it is common to become down on yourself about being alone or being single. There is nothing wrong with being single. Single is not a status.

Every person should strive towards happiness in their daily lives. Human beings are only given so many days on earth and therefore have a duty to make the most of their allotted time. Far too often, people tend to attach their happiness to external things, such as geographical locations or other people, especially significant others. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with finding happiness in a romantic relationship, an individual's happiness should not be determined by whether or not they are single or in a relationship. Believe it or not, countless people struggle with feeling happy while being simultaneously single. Unfortunately, society plays a role in the aforementioned internal battle that many people are plighted with. Every day, individuals are bombarded with movies, TV shows, and other forms of advertisement which depict people in relationships as ecstatic and fulfilled, while their single counterparts are portrayed as lonely and miserable.

This sounds obvious, I know, but a lot of people are afraid to do things by themselves. Go to the movies. Have a meal.
