Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney

With the publication of Bright Lights, Big City in 1984, Jay McInerney became a literary sensation, heralded as the voice of a generation. The novel follows a young man, living in Manhattan as if he owned it, through nightclubs, fashion shows, editorial offices, and loft parties as he attempts to outstrip mortality and the recurring approach of dawn. With nothing but goodwill, controlled substances, and wit to sustain him in this anti-quest, he runs until he reaches his reckoning point, where he is forced to acknowledge loss and, possibly, to rediscover his better instincts. This remarkable novel of youth and New York remains one of the most beloved, imitated, and iconic novels in America.

On the other hand, the film version calls its leading character Jamie Conway and allows him no real equivalent of the novel's astute, dry, nicely self-mocking second-person narration. McInerney's hero tells himself at one juncture. McInerney's book has rightly been compared with J. Salinger's ''Catcher in the Rye'' for its complete immediacy, its funny, vibrant and original style, its young man's view of responsibility and authority, and its underlying pain. When a book leaves its mark upon a generation in the way that these have, the movie-making impulse is seldom far behind.

Writer-director James Bridges had a distinctly sociological and journalistic bent. His films delved into hot-button political issues the nuclear meltdown thriller The China Syndrome , brought articles about lifestyle trends to the big screen 's Urban Cowboy , 's Perfect and adapted autobiographical novels about narrow cultural milieus, like the classic law-school drama The Paper Chase and 's yuppie-tastic Bright Lights, Big City, where he replaced original director Joyce Chopra. Keaton gone to seed. In the role that failed to shake up his image, Michael J. Fox, America's favorite teenager even as a lates Canadian plays McInerney's fictional surrogate, a fact-checker at an upscale, New Yorker- like magazine who sublimates his grief over his mother's death and his model wife's abandonment into a nightlife full of clubbing, binge drinking, and blow. All the while, Fox works on an autobiographical novel and stumbles blearily toward redemption. Pity the film's self-destructive protagonist: He wants to be F.

What does cocaine make you feel like? It makes you feel like having some more cocaine. And that is what Jamie Conway feels like, all day, every day. The chasm between his professional existence and his private life is laughable, and it's growing impossible to keep up the charade that he even cares about the things he's supposed to be doing. He works for a high-powered New York magazine, and the only two things that keep him on the job are guilt and the need for money. He needs the money because he puts it into his nose.

Its author, Jay McInerney, did the screenplay. And Michael J. Fox, a hugely popular television star not exactly unknown to moviegoers, plays the lead. Well, possibly it degenerated into pretty-looking vacuity because McInerney did the screenplay, Bridges the direction and Fox the central role. Real emotion, for one thing. Believability might also have been nice. Fox is hard-pressed to suggest a two-Excedrin headache.
