Dealing with parody and satire is always a tricky thing for churches. We can easily appear thin-skinned or defensive, and churches sometimes are. A few members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who have seen this musical and blogged about it seem to have gone out of their way to show how they can take it. As I reflected on all that time spent parodying this particular target, I also wondered what was really going on with Mormons in Africa during those same seven years. The danger is not when people laugh but when they take it seriously — if they leave a theater believing that Mormons really do live in some kind of a surreal world of self-deception and illusion. A couple of weeks ago a review about the musical appeared in the New York Times from a Jewish writer who simply listed himself as Levi.

In The Book of Mormon , Broadway gets treated to one of its funniest and most irreverent Broadway musicals of all time. But nothing could prepare critics or audiences for the blasphemous hilarity and zestful vulgarity of The Book of Mormon. Two squeaky-clean missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are sent from Utah to proselytize in Uganda; set down in a beleaguered village terrorized by a local warlord and suffering from disease and other horrors, our Mormon boys find their work cut out for them. Parker, Stone and Lopez gleefully lampoon Mormonism as well as African stereotypes—and they do so in the framework of a traditional book musical that references a host of canonical musicals, from The Lion King to The King and I. It is directed by Trey Parker and Casey Nicholaw. It began previews on February 24, , and opened on March 24,

God's favourite musical also opens in Brisbane in January and Auckland in March. God loves Mormons and he wants some more. Deceiving a bunch of his followers and leading at least one astray. The deception played out over several months in my teens when my family briefly rented a house within Bible-bashing distance of the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Every Saturday morning, without fail, young male missionaries brandishing their good books and styled in their requisite short-sleeved, buttonup white shirt, plain tie and rectangular nametag would beat a path to our front door.
