Blood and Politics: The History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream by Leonard ZeskindMore than fifteen years in the making, Blood and Politics is the most comprehensive history to date of the white supremacist movement as it has evolved over the past three-plus decades. Leonard Zeskind draws heavily upon court documents, racist publications, and first-person reports, along with his own personal observations.
An internationally recognized expert on the subject who received a MacArthur Fellowship for his work, Zeskind ties together seemingly disparate strands—from neo-Nazi skinheads, to Holocaust deniers, to Christian Identity churches, to David Duke, to the militia and beyond. Among these elements, two political strategies—mainstreaming and vanguardism—vie for dominance. Mainstreamers believe that a majority of white Christians will eventually support their cause. Vanguardists build small organizations made up of a highly dedicated cadre and plan a naked seizure of power. Zeskind shows how these factions have evolved into a normative social movement that looks like a demographic slice of white America, mostly blue-collar and working middle class, with lawyers and Ph.D.s among its leaders.
When the Cold War ended, traditional conservatives helped birth a new white nationalism, most evident now among anti-immigrant organizations. With the dawn of a new millennium, they are fixated on predictions that white people will lose their majority status and become one minority among many. The book concludes with a look to the future, elucidating the growing threat these groups will pose to coming generations.

In this episode, we speak with Leonard Zeskind, a historian, speaker, organizer, and author of the long heralded book, Blood and Politics: White Nationalism From the Margins to the Mainstream. In this podcast, we talk with Leonard about the history of white nationalism, and what made it grow from small sets of cadres into a mass, insurrectionary movement that also helped birth the modern militias. We discuss how in the s and s, the white nationalist movement operated out of a variety of Christian Identity camps and bible study retreats, radio stations, and organized heavily armed homesteads that ran paramilitary training centers, while also rubbing elbows at times with the Christian Right and the Republican Party. At a time when the murders of Atomwaffen Division and swastikas etched into the clips of school shooters grab headlines, it is important that we look at both the history and the ideas which have shaped these movements. We must also come to understand that without a material autonomous force that can build relationships and better the lives of poor and working class people while pushing towards a revolutionary horizon, the possibilities for the growth of a violent and revolutionary Right, will only continue to grow. For the past 40 years, white supremacists have lurked beyond the sidelines of American politics, fantasizing about power yet shunning the public eye. In this page doorstop, Leonard Zeskind, a former factory worker and labor organizer who has become a single-minded watchdog of the racist right, offers a blinding dose of sunlight. Blood and Politics considers contemporary Klansmen, neo-Nazis, and militia members and argues that they are in fact a single movement with a common—if fractious—history. His archrival, Pierce, author of race-war novel The Turner Diaries, insisted on violent revolution. He died in The two even disagreed on fundamentals such as Holocaust revisionism: Carto is a denier; Pierce hailed the Holocaust as a portent of things to come.
