A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell

She’s your best friend.
She knows all your secrets.
That’s why she’s so dangerous.
A single mothers life is turned upside down when her best friend vanishes in this chilling debut thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

It starts with a simple favor—an ordinary kindness mothers do for one another. When her best friend, Emily, asks Stephanie to pick up her son Nicky after school, she happily says yes. Nicky and her son, Miles, are classmates and best friends, and the five-year-olds love being together—just like she and Emily. A widow and stay-at-home mommy blogger living in woodsy suburban Connecticut, Stephanie was lonely until she met Emily, a sophisticated PR executive whose job in Manhattan demands so much of her time.

But Emily doesn’t come back. She doesn’t answer calls or return texts. Stephanie knows something is terribly wrong—Emily would never leave Nicky, no matter what the police say. Terrified, she reaches out to her blog readers for help. She also reaches out to Emily’s husband, the handsome, reticent Sean, offering emotional support. It’s the least she can do for her best friend. Then, she and Sean receive shocking news. Emily is dead. The nightmare of her disappearance is over.

Or is it? Because soon, Stephanie will begin to see that nothing—not friendship, love, or even an ordinary favor—is as simple as it seems.

A Simple Favor is a remarkable tale of psychological suspense—a clever and twisting free-fall of a ride filled with betrayals and reversals, twists and turns, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge. Darcey Bell masterfully ratchets up the tension in a taut, unsettling, and completely absorbing story that holds you in its grip until the final page.

A Simple Favor - Movie Review - MovieBitches Ep 203

A Simple Favour ending explained: What really did happen to Emily?

A Simple Favor has similar themes; it revolves around Stephanie, a devoted mommy vlogger Kendrick and her best friend Emily Lively , a mysterious, sartorially blessed P. Which is to say, it loses its mind and takes the audience on a crazy, flashy journey, amping up each plot twist with a bigger, wilder plot twist. For starters, the crux of A Simple Favor rests on a time-honored plot-twist tradition: secret twin. The girls grew up in a strict household with a manic father, and one day they snap and set one wing of their giant house on fire, killing him. The story gets picked up in the local news, with folks wondering what happened to the girls. Worried about getting arrested—and aware that a pair of towering blonde twins are super conspicuous—the teens split up, agreeing to meet again at an agreed upon date.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for A Simple Favour , up to and including its ending. Paul Feig's irresistible mystery thriller is based on the novel by Darcey Bell and follows vlogger Stephanie Smothers Anna Kendrick as she attempts to get to the bottom of what happened to her friend — and whether Emily's husband Sean Henry Golding had anything to do with it. There are plenty of twists packed into the movie's two-hour running time and they come thick and fast as it heads into the final act, so to get to the bottom of what really happened to Emily, we thought we'd lay it all out for you. Needless to say, there are massive spoilers ahead. The movie opens as Stephanie is giving her latest vlog, updating her followers on the fact that Emily has been missing for five days since she asked her for "a simple favour" to pick up her son from school. For any new followers and Emily's disappearance does have its benefits for Stephanie's vlog , she then handily recaps the events leading up to it before we get back to the present day.

A Simple Favor is a American comedy mystery thriller film directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Jessica Sharzer , based on the novel of the same name by Darcey Bell. Stephanie Smothers Anna Kendrick is a widowed single mother who runs a vlog featuring crafts and recipes. The two women become friends when their sons share a play date. Over martinis, they exchange confessions, where Stephanie tells Emily admits that as a teenager, she had sex with her half-brother Chris. Emily expresses her frustration at the lack of success of her husband, English professor Sean Townsend Henry Golding , and their poor financial situation. Emily has a work crisis and asks Stephanie to babysit Nicky while Sean is in London attending to his injured mother.

Common Sense says

Major spoilers ahead. Whether you've seen A Simple Favor and just can't stop thinking about it or are one of those people who love reading spoilers before seeing a movie, welcome! You are at the right place. The ending of A Simple Favor is, simply, bonkers. As is the entire movie. From Blake Lively's first suit to Andrew Rannells hitting her with his car , this movie never slows down — there are truly so many twists in A Simple Favor.

It's a thriller told with a broad sense of humor even slapstick at times. One false move could have been deadly, resulting in a film self-serious, or straining to be "relevant," or—worse—just plain old boring. It's suspenseful, but also hilarious. It's insightful about the head games women can play with each other, but it doesn't burden itself with trying to be "meaningful. What a relief to watch a film unafraid of letting its hair down. The funky stylized credits sequence designed by David Clayton clues us in immediately that this isn't going to be a gloomy by-the-book thriller. A throwback to s comedies or spy capers, the credits involve single-color images of stilettos and purses moving around in angular cut-out shapes, a collage of conspicuous consumption, with one of the many classic French pop songs blaring behind it.
