Drive, They Said: Poems about Americans and Their Cars

What Happened To My Car? Runaway car, dangerously out of control. Spinning toward me, hits the curb, lands close. I jump, hop, run into the school building. She comes after me. Honking mad. Crashes into the red bricks.

In my line of work, I have to know a little about cars. Enough at least to talk to a mechanic or body man without being laughed out of the shop. But cars are more to us than their clearly labeled parts. Cars are about image, and which ones they conjure for us. And they are about memory, and the ones that a certain car or truck helped us create, whether for good or bad.

When I met Carol she was driving a pretty good car, except for the air-conditioner, which used to make the engine overheat. Now Carol likes nice things, but what with college bills and all, a couple years with me and her blue Subaru went downhill fast and I got to see a new side of her, that her idea of a good day is breaking down outside a gas station. Eventually her engine started overheating even without the air-conditioner; in fact tile only way to keep the temperature out of the red zone on a hot day was to turn the heat on. We had the most incredible conversation! Triple-A has us on speed-dial. And vice versa. I thought what a classic she is, the miles look good on her.
