What god says about laziness
Crazy Lazy: A warning against laziness by Alistair BeggAlistair Begg is one of my favorite preachers. I love hearing his thick brogue as he expounds upon Biblical texts. Crazy Lazy is a short 40-page treatise on the dangers of slothfulness. This book reads as though it is a transcription of one of his messages. He frequently speaks of the dangers for college students to be subdued by laziness.
I found the book both insightful and convicting. I dont view myself as a lazy person, but I can be a skilled procrastinator when I want to be, a problem that he directly addresses. I think this book is timely in our culture.
I read the book on a short plane ride. You can read it in an hour or less. I think it offers sound exegesis on the Proverbs and would be a beneficial book for all teens to read. I also think everyone who is getting any kind of government subsidy should be required to read this book. Before you start blasting me with comments about how everyone on a government subsidy isnt lazy, let me head you off at the pass. I know that! But lets be honest. There is tremendous abuse in our welfare system. We have unwittingly awarded lazy and slothful behavior in many people (not ALL, but many).
"What Does The Bible Say About Laziness?"
Fighting Laziness with The Word
Commit some of these verses to memory, and use them as a sword against sluggishness and idleness! Most of us can identify with at least a little bit of laziness in ourselves. There might be various reasons for our inactivity and we might have different incapabilities that limit our ability to go to action. But God knows how much we can bear. He will not give us a task we cannot handle.
Proverbs - The soul of the sluggard desireth, and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. Colossians - And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 2 Thessalonians - For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. Proverbs - He becometh poor that dealeth [with] a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. Proverbs - He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster. Proverbs - The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
As Americans, we pride ourselves on being hard workers. It is a status symbol. To admit that you are not busy, or to confess sloth, is anathema. But, we are actually quite lazy many times. I heard Chip Ingram define laziness once as not doing what you should be doing at the time. Proverbs bears this out.
The Bible has a great deal to say about laziness. Proverbs is especially filled with wisdom concerning laziness and warnings to the lazy person. Proverbs tells us.

Persistent laziness should not be permitted. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. Hard work should characterize the Christian's life-style. Lazy people are not successful people.
Some people are always tired because of a bad sleeping pattern, sleep deprivation, bad eating, thyroid problems, lack of exercise, etc. If anyone is having trouble with fighting laziness. Check out these things first. Scripture has a lot to say on this topic. Clearly we see that laziness is a sin and it also leads to poverty. Some people would rather sleep in their bed all day rather than making a living and that will be their downfall.
