The Red Badge of Courage Quotes and Analysis

Red Badge is a study of courage and fear, as seen in the shifting currents of Henry's thoughts and actions during the battle. Henry begins the story with youthful romanticized ideas about courage from the classical tradition: in particular, the heroic ideals found in the ancient Greek epic poem the Iliad by Homer. In the Iliad , warriors mingle with gods, die gloriously, and enjoy everlasting fame. But the tremendous violence of the Civil War unsettled these notions of courage and glory. Instead, they discover a grittier and more complicated form of courage. And they only discover it after the fact: during Henry's most courageous moments in battle, he is hardly aware of anything except heat, noise, anger, and the mechanical repetition of firing. Even when courage is present, it's not really there.

In 's Cuba, a bank clerk and an American mercenary assist a revolutionary group in a plan to kill the President but the Cuban Secret Police chief and the dictator's military complicate the plan's execution. Hiding in the mountains from the law, father and son break wild horses until a lost female lawyer joins them to help clear their name, but some would rather see them dead.

Before the first battle, new recruit Henry must grapple with a profound question regarding his courage or lack thereof : will he, when faced with the enemy and the possibility of imminent, painful death, stand tall and fight or retreat in shame? Crane spends the rest of the novel in Henry's head, working through this debate and showing the consequences of what Henry eventually does do. This central question and Henry's grappling with it is one of the reasons why the novel is so lauded - it is extremely realistic and relatable. All young soldiers no doubt ponder whether or not they have what it takes to face death and carry out their orders. Henry smartly acknowledges that nothing in his comfortable life leading up to the war has prepared him for this moment. All human beings wonder if, when faced with terrible adversity, they have what it takes to remain calm, courageous, and committed to the task before them.

He remembered he had often cursed the brindle cow and her mates, and had sometimes flung milking stools. He became not a man but a member. He felt that something of which he was a part - a regiment, an army, a cause, or a country - was in crisis. He was welded into a common personality which was dominated by a single desire. For some moments he could not flee no more than a little finger can commit a revolution from a hand.

Quote 1: "He had, of course, dreamed of battles all his life - of vague and bloody conflicts that had thrilled him with their sweep and fire. In visions he had seen himself in many struggles. He had imagined peoples secure in the shadow of his eagle-eyed prowess. But awake he had regarded battles as crimson blotches on the pages of the past. He had put them as things of the bygone with his thought-images of heavy crowns and high castles.

  1. Agate B. says:

The youth of this tale felt gratitude for these words of his comrade. At this point in the novel, Henry isn’t as concerned with eliminating his cowardice as he is with justifying it. Henry hopes that his comrades feel the same trepidation as he, as this would justify his own.
