5 Habits that Reveal You’re a Prideful Leader (And 5 Keys to Humility)
Here are just some of the ways that our pride is doing us a disservice. While it prevents you from feeling bad, it ultimately just makes you look bad, and can really alienate people from you. It just becomes a problem when you refuse to admit it. Acting as though your thoughts and feelings are the only ones that matter will only alienate you and make you look too egocentric. Pride may cause us to lie, hide, or cover up the facts. Similar to not wanting to listen to others or ask for help, we sometimes avoid doing something that we know would be beneficial for us solely because it came from someone else.
Leadership is a high stakes game. A proud leader:. Think of your spouse, kids or friends. For years I thought pride and humility were attitudes. Want to be less prideful? Just adopt a humble attitude.
Pride means having a feeling of being good and worthy. The adjective is proud. In a good sense it means having a feeling of self-respect. People can be satisfied with their achievements. They can be proud of something good that they have done.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle described pride as the " crown of the virtues ". It's after all an emotion we experience when we've achieved something great, or when someone close to us has. It usually has a recognisable physical expression — a slight smile, the head tilted back, the chest expanded, with arms raised or akimbo. Think Superman after he's defeated a villain. Yet pride often gets a bad rep. While it can help us feel dignified and aware of our self-worth — ensuring that others do not walk all over us — it can seemingly interfere with empathy and make us come across as arrogant and egocentric.
I'm talking about pride. When you think about the deadly sins, pride's actually kinda confusing. Few ethical people are running around advocating greed. Wrath isn't going to make you a lot of friends. And, as the saying goes, envy is the one deadly sin that's no fun at all. But we all think it's okay to be proud of your family, proud of your country, proud of your religion, and proud of yourself.
