Stefan Zweig e sua segunda mulher, Lotte, escolheram o Brasil como refúgio às atrocidades que eram cometidas na Europa durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Porém, neste período, Zweig não abandonou a escrita. Pelo contrário, foi na casa de Petrópolis que finalizou sua autobiografia (O mundo que eu vi) e escreveu este que, de acordo com Alberto Dines, “é o mais famoso de todos os textos que se escreveram sobre o Brasil”. At the height of his literary career, in the s and s, he was one of the most popular writers in the world. Zweig was born in Vienna , the son of Moritz Zweig — , a wealthy Jewish textile manufacturer, and Ida Brettauer — , a daughter of a Jewish banking family. Zweig studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and in earned a doctoral degree with a thesis on "The Philosophy of Hippolyte Taine ". Religion did not play a central role in his education. Yet he did not renounce his Jewish faith and wrote repeatedly on Jews and Jewish themes, as in his story Buchmendel. Zweig had a warm relationship with Theodor Herzl , the founder of Zionism , whom he met when Herzl was still literary editor of the Neue Freie Presse , then Vienna's main newspaper; Herzl accepted for publication some of Zweig's early essays.

Em , Adolf Hitler chegou ao poder na Alemanha e instalou a ditadura nazista. Em 22 de agosto do mesmo ano, fez sua primeira viagem para o Brasil [ 3 ].

Through these two authors' eyes, Lisboa investigates whether Europe could still serve as a model of civilization for Brazil. Both Ullmann and Zweig witnessed the consequences of the crisis of imperialism, the two World Wars and the rise of Nazism. Indeed, it was this sociopolitical context that drove them to leave their homelands in central Europe. Zweig criticized the European concept of civilization and saw Brazil as a multiethnic, mixed-race society, much like a racial paradise. Despite their enthusiasm, Zweig and Ullmann never ceased to argue that in terms of its cultural development education, art, literature, music, etc. Throughout the analysis, Lisboa pinpoints where the authors agree and disagree on Europe's role in "shaping" peripheral spaces like Brazil.
