In Harms Way: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its Survivors by Doug StantonA harrowing, adrenaline-charged account of Americas worst naval disaster — and of the heroism of the men who, against all odds, survived. Interweaving the stories of survivors, Doug Stanton has brought this astonishing human drama to life in a narrative that is at once immediate and timeless. The definitive account of a little-known chapter in World War II history, In Harms Way is destined to become a classic tale of war, survival, and extraordinary courage.
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. The captains subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered: How did the navy fail to realize the Indianapolis was missing? And perhaps most amazing of all, how did these 317 men manage to survive?

It was 70 years ago this holiday season that the film I think is legendary director John Ford's greatest -- greater even than The Grapes of Wrath or The Searchers -- was released to an American public just a few months removed from the largest war in world history. They Were Expendable is the largely true story of a gallant defeat that set the stage for the victory to come, the last stand of the U. Asiatic Fleet in attempting to defend the Philippines in the wake of Japan's devastating attack on Pearl Harbor.

He must also deal with his estranged son Jere Brandon deWilde , who is serving as an ensign on a patrol torpedo PT boat. As the war encroaches on the lives of these characters, they are each forced to examine their own values and personal definitions of courage. The film also benefited from the strong chemistry between Wayne and Douglas.

Bille August's China-set WWII pic is a formulaic, well-intentioned misfire.
It has had a mixed response over the years as a war film that had a simple story, a charge also leveled against Preminger's other later movies. The title of the film comes from a quote from an American Revolutionary naval hero:. - Once Wayne was cast as Torrey, it was inevitable that the character would have to be a confident and totally competent hero.
These aerial combat sequences take place alternately in washed-out tones with truly horrid vfx, then later in near darkness. The film is on steadier ground, both narratively and aesthetically, when it returns to earth, with d. Filip Zumbrunn opting for more naturalistic tones to depict the lush, idyllic village where Ying crosses paths with the marooned pilot. A war widow, Ying lives in the outskirts of town with her sassy daughter Nunu Fangcong Li , raising silkworms to support her family. Nunu is far more wary of the smelly, poorly groomed interloper crashing in the basement, however, and Ying worries that her daughter might somehow betray his presence to rest of the village. There is, after all, what appears to be an entire Japanese battalion camped out within shouting distance of their house, led by the sadistic captain Shimamoto a cartoonishly bug-eyed, mustache-twirling Tsukagoshi Hirotaka who seems to have eyes for Ying.
