My Phonics Workbook: 101 Games and Activities to Support Reading Skills by Laurin Brainard M

My Phonics Workbook: 101 Games and Activities to Support Reading Skills starts off on an encouraging note: Three pages with a star for each one of the 101 activities. Children can color in the star for each activity that they complete, and then they can review their progress in a simple visual manner. This workbook is designed to help children ages 4 to 6 build the pre-reading skills needed for kindergarten. Activities and games are fun, and they hold a childs interest while developing essential phonics skills which will aid them in learning to read. Each colorful page features a different type of activity, and the difficulty level gradually increases as the child progresses through the book. Here are some of the cute page titles youll find: Busy, Buzzy Bee; In the Doghouse!; Dress the Dragon; Gorilla Grows Grapes; Henry Hunts for H Words; Jackrabbit Jumps for Joy; Lizards Lawn Sale; Skunks Skates; Vickys Vacation; and Yaks Yacht. My favorite is One Sweet Town--Color the words on the path that begin with the sw sound. Then you can color the rest of the full-page picture. At the end of the book, there is a Congratulations Certificate to fill in with the childs name when all the activities are completed. Author Laurin Brainard has created a helpful and happy learning guide that will be enjoyable for children and parents to use together.

The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher. The 40 words and non-words are divided into two sections — one with simple word structures of three or four letters, and one with more complex word structures of five or six letters. The teacher administering the check with your child will give them a few practice words to read first — including some non-words — so they understand more about what they have to do. Your child will be scored against a national standard, and the main result will be whether or not they fall below, within or above this standard. In , , , , , and the "pass threshold" was 32, which means children had to read at least 32 words out of 40 correctly. The threshold mark is communicated to schools at the end of June, after the test has been taken, so that teachers can mark the Check.
