Merrily We Roll Along by George Furth

Stephen Sondheim teamed with his Company collaborators -- playwright George Furth and director Harold Prince-Prince -- to create this musical based on the 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Beginning with its short run on Broadway and continuing through various rewritings and restagings over the years, Merrily may be the most-discussed, least well-known work in Sondheims canon. The musical has an unusual, and unusually intriguing form, following the careers of three theatre artists from the present day back through time to the days when they were starting out, young and idealistic. This homage to the Broadway musical is considered by many to contain one of Sondheims most ebullient and tuneful scores.

We have already lived backward through 23 years of disillusion, as three friends, Frank, Charley and Mary, first seen as hardened adults in , gradually grow younger, shedding their cynicism. A show with one of the richest scores of the s, by Stephen Sondheim — but one of the most problematic books, by George Furth — it has spent the 38 years since its flop Broadway opening on its own backward trajectory to find its best self. Until now. The current production, a six-actor, eight-musician, one-act reduction by Fiasco Theater , in residence at the Roundabout Theater Company, seems not so much stripped-down as emaciated. Purists may focus on the prickly new orchestrations by Alexander Gemignani and iffy singing by almost everyone. Fiasco, known for imaginative, fat-free stagings, does not aim for fancy or swell.

Like the optimistic youths at the end — or is it the beginning? But disappointments are often off-set by new discoveries and pleasures found in the musical based on the melodrama by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart as it follows a group of friends backwards in time from cynical middle-age to their idealistic younger selves. This revival comes from the Fiasco Theatre Company — known for its stripped-down productions — and here features six actors playing all the roles, which may make it appealing for the provinces eager to try their hand at the show, too. Like the characters they play at the beginning of their mid-century Manhattan careers, this cast brims with nerve, energy and overreach.

It is based on the play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Furth and Sondheim retained the basic structure and overall theme of the play but updated it to encompass the period from to The story revolves around Franklin Shepard who, having once been a talented composer of Broadway musicals, has now abandoned his friends and his songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies. Like the play, the musical begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing snapshots of the most important moments in Frank's life that shaped the man that he is today. The musical utilizes a chorus that sings reprises of the title song to transition the scenes. The musical ran on Broadway for 44 previews and 16 performances in and marked the end of the Harold Prince -Sondheim collaborations until Bounce in
