Red Lights by Georges Simenon

It is Friday evening before Labor Day weekend. Americans are hitting the highways in droves; the radio crackles with warnings of traffic jams and crashed cars. Steve Hogan and his wife, Nancy, have a long drive ahead—from New York City to Maine, where their children are in camp. But Steve wants a drink before they go, and on the road he wants another. Soon, exploding with suppressed fury, he is heading into that dark place in himself he calls “the tunnel.” When Steve stops for yet another drink, Nancy has had enough. She leaves the car.

On a bender now, Steve makes a friend: Sid Halligan, an escapee from Sing Sing. Steve tells Sid all about Nancy. Most men are scared, Steve thinks, but not Sid.

The next day, Steve wakes up on the side of the road. His car has a flat, his money is gone, and there’s one more thing still left for him to learn about Nancy, Sid Halligan, and himself.

Red Lights

I'd love to see a thriller that was about what "Red Lights" starts to be about, the debunking of psychics by expert paranormal investigators. For its first two acts, the movie had me in its grip. Then it comes apart. Is there a fatal compulsion that draws movies into unnecessary action scenes? The casting could hardly be improved upon.

Two years on, it would be unfair to draw a parallel between the Spanish film-maker's sophomore English-language effort and Richard Kelly's Southland Tales — it's more coherent, for one thing — but you get the picture: a beguiling storyteller gets a free rein and the result leaves the viewer feeling bloated but largely unsatisfied. Red Lights received its world premiere in Park City on Friday night and the programmers couldn't have wished for a better meteorological foreshadowing. Red Lights drips with atmosphere and in a taut opening sequence, paranormal debunker Margaret Matheson played by Sigourney Weaver and her physicist colleague Tom Buckley Cillian Murphy attend a seance at a supposedly haunted house. The homeowners' costly medium is exposed as a hoax and the sceptics depart, another job done. Matheson has spent her life invoking science to disprove what she regards as hokum — the mediums, the healers, the spoon-benders and suchlike. Yet when blind psychic Simon Silver announces he will come out of retirement and go on tour, it reveals a chink in Matheson's armour.

Wasting the talents of an impressive cast on a predictable mystery, Red Lights lacks the clairvoyance to know what audiences want.

Come back, M. Night Shyamalan, all is forgiven. You could be mistaken at first for thinking Red Lights must be a spoof. These guys are professional cynics, even though they come armed to their appointments with lots of electronic doodads and readers and whatnot; are they actually expecting to discover something? Anybody figure out his secret yet? Somewhere along the way, Elizabeth Olsen shows up as an eager young student. This is a world of absurdly, hilariously high stakes.

The skeptical psychologist Dr. Margaret Matheson and her assistant, physicist Tom Buckley, are specialists in disclosing fraudulent paranormal phenomena.
